Get started with YouTube VR

The YouTube VR app allows you to easily find and watch YouTube content, with added support for immersive 360 videos and virtual reality content, on certain headsets and devices. On Meta Quest devices, you can watch content in a fully immersive environment, or in panel mode. YouTube VR supports up to 4K resolution on purchased Movies viewed on Meta Quest, and supports 8K resolution on Meta Quest 3 headsets.

The YouTube VR App is available on the following devices: Meta Quest 1, Meta Quest 2, Meta Quest Pro, Meta Quest 3, and PICO 4.

Sign in

YouTube VR supports a signed in experience, giving you access to several benefits, like viewing your subscriptions.

Immersive mode sign in

  1. From the home screen in immersive mode, select the Account and Settings icon.
  2. Click Sign In.
  3. You’ll see an activation code.
  4. On your computer or mobile device, go to https://youtube.com/activate.
  5. Enter the activation code.
  6. Sign in when asked. If you have several Google Accounts, select the account you use with YouTube. If you’re already signed in, skip to the next step.
  7. Once signed in, you’ll be automatically signed in on your device.
Note: In Step 3, some platforms will allow you to copy the code to clipboard, then open the platform browser to enter the code. Long hold on the trigger to paste the code into the field.
Note: Brand Accounts are not currently supported.

Panel mode sign in

  1. From the home screen in panel mode, select Account and then Settings.
  2. Click Sign In.
  3. You’ll see an activation code. Select it to copy the code to your clipboard.
  4. You'll see a link to sign in. Select it to open the sign in flow in a browser.
  5. Long hold on the trigger to paste the code into the field.
  6. Once you’re signed in, select Done and re-open the YouTube VR app.

Sign out

  1. From the home screen, select the Account and Settings icon.
  2. Select the account you'd like to sign out of.
  3. Click Sign out.

Browse videos

You can browse videos on the Home screen or in playlists by scrolling up and down on the touchpad. You can get to the Home screen at any time by selecting the YouTube logo.

Immersive Environments

You can select from several immersive environments, including Auto, Dark, Light, and Mixed Reality.

Switching environments

  1. From the home screen in immersive mode, select on Environments.
  2. Select an environment.
  • Auto: Default to Light mode while browsing and switch to Dark mode when you watch content.
  • Dark: Default to Dark mode.
  • Light: Default to Light mode.
  • Mixed Reality: Use your spatial data to turn on anchoring the YouTube theater screen in your real world environment.

Note: Mixed Reality environment is only available on Quest and requires Meta Quest spatial data access.

Panel mode

On Quest devices, you can switch from watching videos in immersive mode to panel mode.

Immersive to panel mode

  1. From the home screen in immersive mode, select Watch in Panel.
  2. You’ll be taken to the Quest home with YouTube in panel mode.

Panel to immersive mode

  1. From the home screen in panel mode, select on Watch in Immersive.
  2. You’ll be taken to YouTube in immersive mode.

Search for videos

You can search for videos in YouTube VR in two ways: Voice Search or keyboard search. Search is found in the player controls Menu or from the Home screen.

Voice Search

  1. Click Search Search .
  2. Select the Microphone icon.
  3. Say your search term out loud.

Keyboard search

  1. Click Search Search .
  2. Enter what you're looking for using the keyboard.

You can filter your search results by choosing from one or more of the following selections: 360°, VR180, 4K, 3D and CC.

Player controls

While playing a video, click anywhere on the screen.

The player controls allow you to perform many actions including:

  • Play/pause the video.
  • Change volume.
  • Go to the previous video.
  • Go to the next video.
  • Change viewing settings.

Turn captions on or off

  1. Click Settings Settings .
  2. Click Captions.
  3. Select the desired language.

Change video quality

  1. Click Settings Settings .
  2. Click Quality.
  3. Select the desired video quality.

Turn Curved screen on or off (for non-360 videos and ads)

  1. Click Settings Settings .
  2. Select Curved screen and turn On or Off.

To dismiss the player controls, click anywhere on the video or wait until they are dismissed automatically.

Re-Center your view

You may find that the cursor or view drifts off in one direction. The cursor and view can be quickly re-centered using the controller.
  1. Aim the controller forward.
  2. Hold down the Home button on your controller.

Report inappropriate videos, channels, and other content

If you’re using a VR device, you can follow the instructions below to report inappropriate content directly from the YouTube VR app.

Report a video

YouTube reviews reported videos 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. A video can be reported anytime after it’s uploaded to YouTube. If our review team doesn't find any violations, the video will remain uploaded and further reports won’t change its status.
To report a video:
  1. Open the YouTube app .
  2. Go to the video that you’d like to report.
  3. Press the trigger (or pinch if using hands) to pull up the playbar.
  4. To the right of the playbar, select Settings  and then Report .
  5. Select the reason that best fits the violation in the video.
  6. Confirm submission by selecting OK.

Note: To check the status of a video you’ve reported, on a computer, visit your Report History. Learn more about your Report History.

Report a Short

YouTube reviews reported videos 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. A video can be reported anytime after it’s uploaded to YouTube. If our review team doesn't find any violations, the video will remain uploaded and further reports won’t change its status.
You can report YouTube Shorts from the Shorts player:
  1. Sign in to YouTube.
  2. Go to the Short that you’d like to report.
  3. Press the trigger (or pinch if using hands) to pull up the playbar.
  4. To the right of the playbar, select Settings  and then Report .
  5. Select the reason that best fits the violation in the video.
  6. Confirm submission by selecting OK.

Note: To check the status of a video you’ve reported, on a computer, visit your Reporting History. Learn more about your Reporting History.

Report a channel

You can report users, inappropriate background images, or inappropriate profile avatars. To report a channel:
  1. Open the YouTube app .
  2. Go to the channel page that you’d like to report.
  3. At the top right, select More  and then Report user .
  4. Select the reason that best fits the violation of the channel.
  5. Select Report.
    • Optional: The window that opens may ask you to enter more details. Enter any other details that you want to share.

Note: When you report a channel, we don’t review the channel’s videos. We use the videos that you may attach to your report to understand more about the channel, but we don’t check the videos for violations. Channel features that we review include, but aren't limited to, the channel’s profile picture, handle, and description. If you think that a channel’s specific videos violate our policies, you should report the specific videos.

Report a playlist

You can report a playlist if its content, title, description, or tags violate our Community Guidelines:
  1. Open the YouTube app .
  2. Go to the playlist that you’d like to report.
  3. To the right of the “Play all” button, select More   and then Report     and then Report.

Report a thumbnail

You can report a video thumbnail that violates our Community Guidelines:
  1. Open the YouTube app .
  2. Go to the video that you’d like to report on your home page, in suggested videos, or in search results. You can't report a thumbnail from a video's watch page.
  3. At the top right corner of the thumbnail, select More   and then Report .
  4. Select the reason that best fits why you want to report the thumbnail.
  5. Select Report.

Report a comment

You can report a comment that violates our Community Guidelines:
  1. Sign in to YouTube.
  2. Go to the comment that you’d like to report.
  3. Select More   and then Report .
  4. Select the policy that the comment violates.
  5. Confirm submission by selecting OK.
    • Optional: As a creator, after you have reported a comment, you can prevent that user’s comments from showing on your channel. Tick the box next to Hide user on my channel and then select OK.

My comment has been incorrectly marked as spam

If you believe that your comment was incorrectly marked as spam, you can get in touch with the uploader and ask them to reinstate your comment.

Report an ad

If you find an ad that's inappropriate or violates the Google Ads policies, you can report it. Fill in and submit this form.
To report an ad from a video:
  1. At the bottom of the ad, select 'Why this ad?' .
  2. Select Report ad .
  3. Fill out and submit the form. Our team will review your ad report and act if appropriate.
